The Journey through beauty and scenery starts sooner on the trip to Yellowstone National Park. Remember you're on a Vacation. Leave the hustle and bustle of Interstate 15 that transports freight and big trucks north.
Take the Brigham City exit and head east up Box Elder Canyon, past the beautiful Mantua Resivoir. Ascend through Sardine canyon, and enjoy the view of Cache Valley. Head into Logan, Utah where the road splits and heads east. Follow the flowing rivers and creeks beginning a long climb of the Bear River Range.
Summit Logan Canyon to get the best views of the turquoise waters of Bear Lake, one of the best scenes in the entire United States. Bear Lake is the third largest lake in Utah even with half of it in Idaho. The stunning turquoise color is caused by suspended limestone particles in the water. Earning it the name “Caribbean of the Rockies”.
Following the coast of Bear Lake you are now on the Oregon Trail Scenic Byway. On Highway 89, you will pass through Paris, Idaho home of the Bear Lake Stake Tabernacle. Inside and out, the beautiful tabernacle. erected in 1888, is an architectural masterpiece. Enter Montpelier and drive straight up main street to Hwy 30, two city blocks North and find Highway 89 heading East at Yellowstone Junction. Stop in to the The National Oregon/California Trail Center. Then stop and get a picture with the Giant Yellowstone Junction Gold Nugget before heading up Montpelier Canyon into the Preuss Mountain Range. With the clear waters of the Montpelier Creek directly to your right. The views are stunning and fishing is great in the summer and the area was just named Best Snowmobiling in Idaho.
The highway is a nice easy drive year round through picturesque scenery of Southern Idaho and Western Wyoming. The route from Montpelier through Star Valley, Alpine and the Palisades Reservoir was named One Best RV Routes by RV Life Magazine. Head North through Star Valley and into Alpine Wyoming. Cross the bridge at the majestic Snake River. The Mighty Snake River will be your companion all the way through Hoback Junction and on to Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
As Highway 191 winds up the valley with the Grand Tetons to your west and Lake Jackson on the horizon. Before you know it you’ll be at the South Gate of Yellowstone National park. The South Gate only sees 16.4% of Yellowstone's traffic, which will help keep you out of the bumper to bumper traffic. Instead of rushing, take a vacation to your vacation.
